Animal Welfare

At Rossdown, animal welfare is our top priority. We believe healthy, well-cared-for animals are essential for a sustainable food system. That’s why we take their well-being incredibly seriously, implementing rigorous standards that exceed expectations.

Our Three Pillars

Health

At Rossdown, happy and healthy birds are our priority. That’s why we provide them with nutritious feed, fresh water, and a comfortable environment, all to ensure their well-being.

Safe Environment

Our chickens and turkeys thrive in safe, secure barns with ample access to fresh water, nutritious feed, and comfortable resting areas.

Emotional Wellness

From offering ample space to fostering a calming environment, we prioritize our birds’ emotional well-being to ensure a stress-free life.

certified by global animal partnership

Committed to ethical animal welfare, our chickens and turkeys, including Rossdown Organic Chickens, Raised Without Antibiotics Chickens, Free Range & Raised Without Antibiotics Turkeys, and Organic Turkeys, are all certified by Global Animal Partnership (G.A.P.). G.A.P. is a leading organization with a 5-Step Animal Welfare Rating Program. This program encourages higher welfare standards for farm animals throughout the supply chain. By achieving G.A.P. certification, we demonstrate our dedication to the well-being of animals, while also benefiting farmers, consumers, and retailers through a more responsible food system.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN FOR OUR ANIMAL-WELFARE CERTIFIED CHICKENS AND TURKEYS?

G.A.P. Step 1

Raised Without Antibiotics Chicken

Step 1 certification ensures chickens have enough space to move around, with well-lit barns during the day and darkness at night for rest. Additionally, strict limits are in place for how long they can be transported.

G.A.P. Step 2

Free Range & Raised Without Antibiotics Turkey

Building on Step 1 requirements, these turkeys enjoy even more enrichment within the barns, along with natural light from windows.

G.A.P. Step 3

Organic Chicken

Taking animal welfare a step further, our Step 3 chickens are organic and enjoy access to outdoor pastures with plenty of shade and enrichment opportunities. This access starts before 4 weeks old

There are dozens of requirements to meet minimum Global Animal Partnership Standards, including:

Lighting requirements that allow for bright, natural light during the days and dark barns for proper rest at night

Transport time limitations

Restrictions on how quickly birds can grow

Barn enrichments like swings and hay barrels to climb on

More space and fewer birds per barn
